Hips don't lie

Shakira has a song titled “Hip don’t lie”. I have always been wondering what they could possibly be telling us.

In Evolutionary Psychology hips are an important indicator of fertility and it has been shown that men prefer a low waist to hip ratio of about .7. In our evolutionary history (when there was little chance of being overweight) a higher WHR could indicate a possible pregnancy and from an evolutionary point of view, it makes little sense trying to impregnate a woman who is already pregnant.

I recently discovered that hips may actually tell us another thing: they may be indicative of our temperaments. Shakira has a very “fiery” temperament, which I have argued stems from pastoralism and is roughly equivalent to the SP temperament in MBTI (Shakira is an ESFP).

Apart from being attractive, an interesting thing about Shakira’s hips are the angles. The incoming and outgoing angles at her hips are equal and make up 140 degrees.

Compare this to Karen GIllan, an evolutionary hunter-gatherer (or N) type.

Karen’s hips make up 155 degrees, but what’s more interesting, the incoming and outgoing angles are vastly different.

The third evolutionary type is farmer (SJ in MBTI). Selina Gomez is an ISFJ.

The incoming and outgoing angles are symmetrical but somewhat larger than in herder types (160 degrees).

I am not sure how strong the correlation between hips-angles and temperament is, but Shakira may be right: hips don’t lie.
